Justin Langer has been officially appointed as the head coach of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). The Western Australian was in talks with the LSG ownership in England during the World Test Championship (WTC) final where Langer was commentating. Langer replaces Andy Flower who was at the helm as head coach for a two-year period where LSG made it to the playoffs in both seasons.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, the development was confirmed. When it comes to other backroom staff all of them were retained. Actually, it was Gambhir who recommended the name of Langer for the position of head coach at LSG. Langer had helped Gambhir in horning his batting techniques during his playing days. Gambhir worked together with Langer in Perth in 2015. Langer has a record second to none when it comes to coaching. He led the Australian Team to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 and also led the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL) to three titles in the first four seasons.

Justin Langer brings in lots of clarity- Lucknow Super Giants team owner

“I have enjoyed my interaction with JL. He seems to bring in a huge amount of aggression besides a lot of clarity. His name was suggested to me by Gautam. When I interacted with him, I was very impressed. I am very happy that he has become part of the LSG,” the LSG owner said to Cricbuzz. The franchise in a statement thanked Flower for his work as head coach. “As the two-year contract of Andy Flower comes to an end, Lucknow Supergiant’s thanks Andy Flower for his contribution,” the statement read.

Langer shared his thoughts on making it to the LSG unit saying, “Lucknow Super Giants are on the journey of building a great story in the IPL. We all have a role to play in that journey, and I am excited to be a part of the team moving forward.” Notably, LSG and Gujarat Giants (GT) have had just two seasons in the IPL. Both teams have made an impact as GT have made it to two finals consecutively in two years and also won a title in 2022.
