Sri Lanka needed a humongous 429 runs to win

In quest for the record-breaking score, the Sri Lankan team did not have the ideal start as the opener Pathum Nissanka (0) was bowled on the third ball of the innings by Marco Jansen. But when it looked like Sri Lanka would have difficulty in chasing down the target, Kusal Mendis (76) came in. The elegant right-hand batter showed his class as he smashed the South African bowlers all around the park.

Mendis also went on to complete his half-century in just 25 deliveries. But once he got out run made looked difficult for the Sri Lankan batters. Charith Asalanka (79) and skipper Shanaka (68) provided some stability to the chase with well-stitched partnership of 82 runs. But as it was a chase for the Sri Lankan team throughout their batting innings, they lost Asalanka against the run of play. He was dismissed to a slower one from Lungi Ngidi. Shanaka then tried to break his shackle with some big shot but was dismissed by an arm ball from Keshav Maharaj.

The Sri Lankan lower order showed some fight in order to minimize the impact but were bundled out for 326 runs in 44.5 runs. With this massive win, the South Africa team have jumped to second spot on the points table.
