Ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022, Lionel Messi suffers an injury scare

In a big blow to Argentina’s ambitions, Lionel Messi has suffered an Achilles injury just two weeks before the start of the FIFA 2022 World Cup in Qatar. As per reports, the Argentina football star will miss PSG’s next match against Lorient as a precautionary measure. It has been understood that the injury has been seen as a minor one and isn’t something a lot to worry about.

“Leo Messi will remain in treatment for an inflamed Achilles tendon as a precautionary measure. He will resume collective training next week,” PSG said in a statement.

Notably, Lionel Messi appeared in PSG’s last game against Juventus, earlier, this week. Messi isn’t known to have suffered with a lot of injuries in his career. His only injury this season came in the form of discomfort in his calm, which saw him miss three matches in eight days.

It has also been understood that Messi is likely to be back next week ahead of PSG’s last game against Auxerre before the players join their respective teams for the World Cup.

Lionel Messi is regarded as one of the greatest players ever to play football. However, winning a World Cup for his nation remains an unfulfilled desire. The upcoming World Cup in Qatar is his final chance to realize his dream.

Argentina is touted as one of the favourites to lift the World Cup this year. They haven’t lost a single match since losing to Brazil in 2019. Messi lifted his first international trophy after leading his team to Copa America title win in 2021. Drawing inspiration from that win, the Argentina team would be looking to replicate a similar result in the the World Cup.

Argentina boast of some quality players in their squad, namely Lisandro Martinez, Christian Romero, Enzo Fernandez, Lautaro Martinez, Julian Alvarez, to name a few. Talking about Messi’s performance in the World Cup, the Argentina star has six goals and 5 assists to his name across four World Cups.

Under his leadership, Argentina also reached the final of the 2014 World Cup but went down to Germany in the final.
