Virat Kohli, the once No.1 batsman in the world, has been going through a poor reign of form of late. The ex-India captain has not scored a single century since the end of 2019 which is not only detrimental to his career but also the Indian national team in general. Understandably many ex and current players feel that the batting maestro needs to go on a break.
The Australian legend Ricky Pointing is the latest to analyse Indian batter’s woes and offered a piece of advice to the 33-year-old star. The Delhi coach thinks Kohli’s performance woes are a direct result of a tired body and thus, should not deny it some rest. He also believes that the ex-Indian captain will be back to form sooner.
“It (poor form) is going to happen to everyone at some stage. Virat’s probably had a 10 or 12-year run where hasn’t had many down times. But there was a lot of talk and conjecture around the Indian T20 League about how tired and burnt out he might be. That’s for him to work out and assess and find ways to improve, whether it’s a technical thing or a mental thing.” said the Australian ex-cricketer, as quoted by CricTracker
Drawing parallels to his own playing time, Ricky Ponting, seemed to understand Kohli’s conundrum. Talking of the same he said, “One thing I do know from experience is that quite often you bluff yourself as a player that you’re not actually tired, that you’re not physically or mentally tired. You always find a way to get yourself up for training, you always find a way to get yourself up for a game. It’s not until you actually stop and have a couple of days do you realize how tired and fatigued you are.”
After a poor Indian T20 League performance where the Bangalore player made 341 runs in 16 matches, he has been given rest by the board. Virat Kohli is expected to make a comeback against England in the Test match starting on July 1.
