Rohit Sharma was a happy captain thanks to KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. The pair’s 165-run partnership for the 4th wicket helped India start its ODI World Cup 2023 with a win. The Indian team won the game in Chennai on Sunday against Australia with six wickets in hand.

Pat Cummins was clear in his decision-making when he batted first after winning the toss. The Australians had just played Team India in a three-match ODI series before the ODI World Cup 2023. Marcus Stoinis was missing from the XI due to hamstring issues which happened during the Mohali ODI.

Shubman Gill was a notable absentee for India as he still hadn’t recovered after falling ill. The 24-year-old had tested positive for dengue just 48 hours before the game on Sunday. Ishan Kishan was given the chance to make his ODI World Cup 2023 debut.

India strolls to six-wicket win after early hiccups –

Set a target of 200 to win, India was in the doldrums after being reduced to 2/3. Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas fell early as the trio failed to open their account. Starc got the wicket of Kishan, while Hazlewood got the wickets of Rohit and Iyer.

KL Rahul joined Virat Kohli with the two batters adding 165 key runs for the fourth wicket. The pair started sedately but once they got the measure of the bowling there was no stopping the two.

Virat Kohli scored 85 runs off 116 runs with 6 fours in his innings. KL Rahul hit the winning runs and stayed not out on 97 runs with the help of 8 fours and 2 sixes. The winning runs came in the form of a hit over extra cover for a six.

Earlier in the day, Australia were all out for 199 in the 50th over. Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets with the ball. Steve Smith was the top scorer with 46, while Warner scored 41. The Indian spin trio spread their tentacles over the Aussie batters to bowl them out.

Jadeja was the key bowler with the wickets of Carey, Smith, and Labuschagne. The Indian team now will face Afghanistan on Wednesday. The game will be played in New Delhi as India will hope to continue their winning run.
