Hyderabad franchise have released former captain Kane Williamson ahead of the Indian T20 League auction. The Kiwi player is going through a rough patch of form which is the primary mover of this decision by the Indian T20 franchise.
The New Zealand captain spent eight years at the club in which he scored 2101 runs at an average of 36.22 and a healthy strike of 126.03. Williamson played 76 matches for the Hyderabad franchise in which he captained 46 times.
Releasing Williamson will free up INR 14 Crore from Hyderabad’s purse. Reports also suggest that Hyderabad could end up buying Williamson back for a lower price in the Indian T20 League auction which is scheduled to be held on December 23rd.
Rashid Khan had to make way for Williamson in the last auction as Hyderabad chose the Kiwi batter to be the first retention pick. The New Zealand skipper however produced a forgettable season in the Indian T20 League 2022 as he was able to score just 216 runs in 13 innings at a poor average of 19.63 and a paltry strike rate of 93.50.
Williamson’s strike rate was the worst of all players who played 100 balls in the tournament. Given Williamson’s poor performance, his release didn’t come as a huge surprise to many.
The Kiwi batter took to Instagram to thank fans and the franchise after his release. With a picture of himself in Hyderabad jersey, he wrote, “To the franchise, my teammates, the staff and the always amazing #orangearmy- thank you for making it an enjoyable 8 years. This team and the city of Hyderabad will always be very special to me.”
Fans on Twitter were equally thankful for Williamson’s services to the team. One such fans by the name Anant Srivastava said, “Thank you Kane Williamson for everything you have done for SRH. You are my inspiration, I like your calmness, leadership, and batting. You are one of the best all-format batters at present. The way you captained Hyderabad in 2018 was very nice. Also you were the highest run-getter.”
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Williamson’s release from Hyderabad:

Releasing @mayankcricket and kane Williamson is the biggest shocker for me on the basis of one bad season. I have my respect for CSK & MI as how they treat their player. Kings aleays disappointed in this regard and although SRH since Warner saga.

#SRH doing a big mistake by releasing Kane Williamson, this guy is a great captain he always takes his team till semi or final If he is not able to take SRH till final it means it’s because SRH ownership is very bad in IPL auction itself..

You can never understand SRH. Retained Kane Williamson by releasing Rashid Khan and David Warner. And, now they released Kane Williamson. Do they even know what they are doing!? 😂#IPLretention #IPL2023 https://t.co/9AhWTr4GxV
