The ongoing 20-20 World Cup was highly competitive, to begin with but the weather has turned it into an even more fierce tournament. Group 1 which was called as the Group of death became an even more
With nothing else other than pride to play for Sri Lanka took on the England side on Saturday. After winning the toss, the Dasun Shanaka-led side chose to bat first and posted an under-par 141/8 on the board.
The Asian team had started well with both openers Pathum Nissanka (67) and Kusal Mendis (18) getting off to a flyer in the powerplay. Sri Lanka’s middle and lower order however failed to add significant runs to the board and the team as a result of it could only make a small total.
Bhanuka Rajapaksa (22) was the only other batter to do well with the bat. Mark Wood was the pick of the bowlers from the England side with his 3 wickets in 4 overs.
Coming onto chase what was an easy target, England batters got off to a flyer with both openers Jos Butler (28) and Alex Hales (47) adding significant runs to the board. England’s middle order saw a similar failure as Sri Lanka as most batters went back to the dressing room without taking their team across the finish line. It was again Ben Stokes (42*) who became the saviour of the England team after taking them home with 2 balls to spare. Chris Woakes also remained unbeaten at 5 to help his team get over the finishing line.
As a result of this win, England have surpassed Australia on the table and have qualified for the semi-final stage of the 20-20 World Cup. The defending champions Australia meanwhile have crashed out of the 20-20 World Cup adding another to the failure of champions defending their World Cup.

Lovely tribute to Kohli on his birthday that Australians will yet again be cursing the name "Ben Stokes".
