The inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) season 2 turned out to be an edge-of-a-seat thriller. Eventually in the end it was the Delhi Capitals Women (DEL-W) who could not strive in the crunch situation. A last-ball six from S Sanjana sealed the deal for the defending champions, Mumbai Indians Women (MUM-W).
Talking about the game, the MUM-W skipper Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bowl first on a batting-friendly pitch. The DEL-W did not have the best start as they lost Shefali Varma in the third over of the game. However, the skipper Meg Lanning (31) and Alice Capsey (75) brought the fight to the strong-looking MUM-W bowling lineup. The duo stitched a partnership of 64 runs for the second wicket. However, trying to up the scoring rate the skipper Lanning was dismissed.
But this did not stop Capsey from scoring as she was joined by Jemimah Rodrigues (42) who also complemented the star England player. Both stitched a brilliant partnership of 74 runs in just 39 deliveries. It was some late hitting from Marizanne Kapp who made sure DEL-W had a respectable total on the board to defend.
In pursuit of the target, the defending champions did not have the best of starts as they lost the star batter Hayley Matthews in the very first over of their innings. However, Nat Sciver Brunt (19) along with Yastika Bhatia (57) took the attack on the DEL W bowling. The duo smoked 50 runs inside the batting powerplay. However, against the run of play, Brunt was dismissed courtesy of a brilliant delivery from Arundhati Reddy.
But then it was skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (55) and Bhatia who tried matching the asking run rate. They both made sure that it never went out of reach. However, trying to score quick runs Bhatia was also dismissed. Soon, Amelia Kerr (24) too followed Bhatia in the 18th over. Eventually, it all boiled down to the final over, where MI-W needed 12 runs to win. Kaur backed herself and scored 6 runs on the third as well as the fourth ball of the over. It meant that 6 runs were needed in 2 balls. Unfortunately, in trying to hit the glory shot, the Indian skipper was caught at deep Long on. With 6 runs needed on the last ball, S Sanjana walked in and blasted a huge six throughout mid-wicket to seal the deal for MI-W. Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to this match;
