A big news comes from the camp of Mumbai Indians. The 5-time champions of the IPL have announced Hardik Pandya as their captain for the 2024 IPL. MI took to their social media handle to confirm the same. This might be one of the biggest transition periods in recent times in the IPL. Rohit Sharma, the All-time great captain of IPL, will no longer be the captain of MI.
The news has made the MI fans restless. Rohit Sharma was not just their best captain, but one of the greatest captains of the IPL. Age probably played a big role in the change of captaincy. The Indian Test captain is 36 years old currently and would be 37 by the time IPL 2024 would come to an end. The future of Rohit in the format is uncertain. Hence, MI probably looked at a futuristic option.
Last month, MI got Hardik in a trade with Gujarat Titans. The move surprised many, as MI already had many star players. The intentions of MI are probably clear now, as they named Hardik their captain for IPL 2024. The star All-rounder helped GT to win their maiden title in 2022. The following year, GT came close to winning another trophy. In terms of leadership, Hardik is second to none either.
Rohit helped MI to win the title in 5 seasons. Before Rohit appeared in the IPL, MI were trophyless. After Rohit joined them, MI won trophies for fun. In 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, MI won the IPL for 5 seasons. All of them were under the captaincy of Rohit. Mahela Jayawardene spoke about the same in the statement. “It is part of legacy building and staying true to the MI philosophy of being future ready,” said Mahela.
“Mumbai Indians have always been blessed with exceptional leadership right from Sachin to Harbhajan and Ricky to Rohit, who while contributing to the immediate success have always had an eye on strengthening the team for the future. It is in keeping with this philosophy that Hardik Pandya will assume captaincy of Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2024 season,” added Jayawardene.
