India won the ODI World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan by 8 wickets with 90 balls to spare. A collective team effort meant that India chased the total with relative ease. It was the bowlers who set the game up with their brilliant bowling. The batters did not have to do something out of the box. That’s exactly what the Indian batters did. Rohit Sharma, in particular, was so effortless in his stay in the middle and scored runs for fun.

Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. On a good batting surface, Afghanistan managed to score only 272 runs. Indian bowlers were right on the money from the start. Jasprit Bumrah, in particular, was sensational at the start. The right-arm pacer got the ball to swing into the right-handers and troubled the openers a lot. Bumrah claimed 4 wickets for 39 runs in his spell of 10 overs.

After 13.1 overs, Afghanistan was reduced to 61/3. That was when Azmatullah Omarzai joined Hashmatullah Shahidi. The two batters were involved in a 121-run stand for the fourth wicket, which revived the innings of Afghanistan. But the wicket of Omarzai changed the game completely. Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, and Ravindra Jadeja bowled collectively well.

Rohit Sharma blasts fastest ODI World Cup hundred by an Indian

The efforts of the Indian bowlers did not go well, as they reduced Afghanistan to just 272 runs. Chasing the target, Indian batters went berserk at the top. Rohit was aggressive from the start and continued the momentum till the end. In 61 balls, Rohit got to his hundred and registered the fastest hundred by an Indian batter. Rohit was on song and single-handedly took the game away from Afghanistan.

Even Ishan Kishan and Virat Kohli batted well at the other end. The duo scored 47(47) and 55(56) respectively. But it was Rohit, who stole the show with his batting. The Indian captain scored 131 runs in 84 balls, which included 16 fours and 5 sixes. Barring Rashid Khan, no other bowler from Afghanistan could pick wickets, which cost them the match.
