Asian Games 2023 saw Nepal start the competition with a resounding win over Mongolia. Nepal won the match by 273 runs in what was a lop-sided contest right from the start. The Maldives are the next opponents for Nepal as they are now favourites for the Quarter-final spot.
Kushal Malla and Dipendra Singh set the Pingfeng Cricket Campus Stadium alight on Wednesday. The two batters created new batting records as they took the Mongolian bowlers to the cleaners.
Indian men’s cricket team is set to play its first game on 3rd October. Ruturaj Gaikwad will be leading the side as they will play the quarter-final game. Indian women’s team recently won the gold by beating Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final.
Mongolia won the toss and put Nepal into bat. It was a hapless day as Mongolia was being hammered on the field in the Asian Games 2023. Nepal scored 314/3 which is the highest-ever team total in the history of T20 Cricket. Afghanistan’s 278 for 3 wickets in 2019 against Ireland was the previous record.
The Mongolian bowlers began well, as they kept the scoring rate under check. Opener Kushal Bhurtel could only score 19 which came off 23 deliveries with two fours. Aasif Shaikh meanwhile hit two boundaries during his knock of 16 runs.
Rohit Paudel, Nepal’s skipper took over the scoring along with young Kushal Malla. The pair put up a stand of 193 runs for the 3rd wicket in 65 balls. Paudel scored 61 runs off 27 balls with 2 fours and 6 sixes.
The stars of the day were Kushal Malla and Dipendra Singh. 19-year-old Kushal Malla scored his century in just 34 balls. This was one delivery quicker than Rohit Sharma and David Miller’s joint 35-ball century. Kushal Malla ended unbeaten on 137 runs with 12 sixes and 8 fours. His knock came off a mere 49 deliveries.
Dipendra Singh then broke the 16-year-old record held by Yuvraj Singh. The 23-year-old smashed the fastest fifty in T20 cricket when he got to the mark in 9 balls. Yuvraj Singh had scored his fifty runs in 12 balls against England in 2007. Dipendra Singh hit 52 runs off 10 balls with 8 sixes in his knock.
Mongolia was bowled out for 41 runs as Nepal won the game by 273 runs. This margin of victory was the highest in T20 cricket. The previous record was held by the Czech Republic when they won by 257 runs.
