Prithvi Shaw announced his international arrival with a bang, joining legendary cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar on the list of young players to smash a century in Test cricket. However, his stylish entry did not last long as he soon became out of favour in the eyes of the Indian selectors due to inconsistent performances. Despite being in the controversial picture recently and receiving constant criticism for his fitness, the 23-year-old has continued to showcase his skills.
On Wednesday, August 9, Shaw, who is playing his maiden county tournament, smashed a sensational double hundred for Northamptonshire in the ongoing Royal One Day Cup. The right-hander scored 244 off 153 balls and became the first Indian player to score a double century in List A cricket in England. The Maharashtra-born cricketer was unaware of the feat but expressed his happiness at registering the sixth-highest individual score in List A cricket.
“Oh am I? I didn’t know that. But, it feels great and hopefully, I can score more. I try not to think too much and take each game at a time. My main priority when I bat is to score runs for my team and make the team win games. But, I feel I am hitting the ball well and I hope that my runs do the talking,” the out of favour star said.
Shaw achieved a massive feat in the previous Ranji Trophy season by scoring 379 runs against Assam. He surpassed Sanjay Manjrekar’s record (377) for the highest individual innings score in Mumbai and also marked the second-highest in the history of the Ranji Trophy. However, the destructive opener had a poor outing in the 2023 Indian Premier League, where he managed just 106 runs in eight matches.
“As a modern cricketer, it is important to adapt to all the conditions. Initially, England was cold and rainy so I wore jumpers to keep myself warm. I am very grateful to my friend Brindon Bagirathan and Northamptonshire CCC for giving me this opportunity. I just want to keep winning games for Northampton and hopefully, the rest will be given,” Shaw concluded.
Here’s how fans reacted to Prithvi Shaw’s statement:
