It was like the Avengers multiverse came together but this was a sports parallel as two of the most distinguished voices in sports met. Peter Drury, a voice that resonates with many in the great game of football, and Harsha Bhogle, the voice of cricket in India, met in England amid the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final in England. When the two met, it was like two sweet musical notes had joined together to create a musical masterpiece.
Both Bhogle and Drury have been icons when it comes to broadcasting and have given fans in cricket and football a lot to cheer about when it comes to commentary. In a candid video conversation between the two, Dury was very excited and he talked about his connection with Harsha Bhogle. “When I learned that I was associated with Harsha, I found that flattering,” Drury added, “Harsha is probably the only one who has never played first-class cricket. And I can promise you that I have never played football at the first-class level either. We are just lovers of sports who conjure up words to pay our bills!” he further said.
Drury talked about being taken aback by the anticipation that was happening around the two of them meeting. He further emphasised that he and Bhogle are simple but highly passionate individuals in their craft. He said they keep honing and doing their craft and they never really expect the attention. “Greatest sporting moments will happen with or without the commentators. Someone has said we are like audio wallpapers, and I agree with that. Commentators are like paint or wallpaper on the wall, not the beautiful picture itself, but an integral part of the background,” Drury said with an air of eloquence.
Drury further said he was mesmerised by Bhogle’s poetic balance while speaking on cricket and also the immense amount of knowledge that he had about the game. “As an Englishman, I really appreciate Harsha’s command over the English language. But the fact that he can do the same in other languages while I can only do it in one makes me envious. To see him understand the technical aspect of the game and discuss it with people who have played 100-odd games for their country… I don’t think I’d be able to do that!” Drury concluded.
Let us take a look at the reactions on Twitter:

In an alternate universe, @bhogleharsha and @Peter Drury join forces for a Boxing Day Test match commentary. Can you imagine the chaos? Cricket fans would hear unexpected football analogies, and football fans would suddenly develop a love for lbw decisions! 🏏⚽️😄

Unparalleled… There'll always be those who argue , there'll always be those who debate and the debate can rage on if you like , Greatest of All time … How he summed up Messi's wc win , it's the most beautiful piece of commentary I've ever heard

The crossover we all need desparately. Can you possibly get him to do small session during the WTC broadcast, Harsha? We've seen many celebs commentating during ICC events. Make this happen please? From an avid fan of both

It still resonates. “Montiel… Argentina, champions of the world. Again. At last. And the nation will tango all night long. 36 years ago since Maradona and Mexico, here finally is a nation's new throng of immortals. Scaloni will be fated, Messi will be sainted…” What a man!
