Gujarat and Bangalore played each for the second time in the ongoing first season of the Women’s T20 League 2023. The last time they played each, the Orange Army, Gujarat won the game by 11 runs. Notably, at the time, the team started with two back-to-back losses and it was their first win. Meanwhile, in the game, the Orange Army won the toss and elected to bat first.
At the toss, Gujarat skipper Rana said, “160-165 looks par on this wicket.” On the other hand, Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana said ” Even if we lose the toss, we want to win the game and we wanted to field anyway.” Sophia Dunkley (16) provided a good start but couldn’t capitalize on her start. With the team losing their first wicket on 27 runs, the likes of Laura Wolvaardt and Sabbhineni Meghana put together 63 runs for the second wicket.
The latter scored 31 off 32 balls. On the other hand, the likes of Wolvaardt (68) and Ashleigh Gardner (41) provided some impetus in the innings. After they got out, the likes of Dayalan Hemalatha (16*) and Harleen Deol (12*) took the team to 188/4.
In reply, the Smriti Mandhana-led side had a great start with the skipper looking for some run under her belt. On the other hand, Sophie Devine dominated the bowling attack. She scored 99 runs off 36 balls but was caught at mid-off trying to score her hundred with a boundary. However, when she got out, the game was pretty much done for the Gujarat side.
They had only 32 runs to defend in 8.1 overs. The likes of Elysse Perry and Heather Knight did the clean-up job as they scored the required runs to register one of the biggest chases in the history of the tournament. The team won the game by eight wickets and 4.3 overs to spare.
