Before the third and final match of the three-match ODI series, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was questioned by the renowned commentator and broadcaster Harsha Bhogle about his white and red ball records. Unexpectedly, the 25-year-old appeared to be a bit irritated.
Pant seemingly didn’t like the question asked by broadcaster Bhogle in the pre-match show. Bhogle drew a parallel with one of India’s greatest openers, Virender Sehwag. He questioned the batsman on how similar to the former opener, Pant’s record in Tests is far better than in white-ball cricket.
“I had asked the same question to Sehwag, now I’ll ask you. Looking at you, we get the feeling that white-ball cricket is your USP but it’s your Test record that is better.” Bhogle asked.
Pant replied, ” Sir, records are just numbers. My white-ball record is not bad either. Doing comparisons is not a part of my life. I’m 24-25, if you want to compare, you can do that when I am 30-32.”
After winning the toss New Zealand captain Kane Williamson invited the Indian team to put runs on the scoreboard. India lost Shubman Gill in the 9th over of the inning. Skipper Shikhar Dhawan also departed after 4 overs scoring 28 runs off 45 balls. Shreyas Iyer once again took the responsibility to lift the innings up but no one from the other end kept the wickets. India will be hosting the 2023 50-over World Cup and this kind of performance in the ODIs can be a serious concern for the team. Seniors players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul who are rested for the New Zealand tour will be back against the Bangladesh series in December.
With a crucial knock of allrounder Washington Sundar, the Men in Blue managed to achieve a fighting total of 219. Sundar scored 51 runs off 64 balls which includes 5 fours and one six. However, the spotlight was on Pant after his controversial interview before the match. The left-hander was also getting trolled as he was preferred ahead of Sanju Samson.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to the interview:
For the 1st time I felt a bit of arrogance in Rishabh !(that record and comparison talks)
