Although the World Cup in Australia saw a wonderful exhibition of cricket so far Rain has been the real winner down under as a few of the Super 12 fixtures especially those played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground have been abandoned due to rain.

Speaking on the same, Former England batter Kevin Pietersen took to Twitter on Saturday to question why the present edition of the 20-20 World Cup could not be played in the glorious Australian sunshine in January or February.

“Why couldn’t this 20-20 World Cup have been played in the glorious Australian sunshine in Jan/Feb? Does anyone know?,” tweeted Pietersen. Five out of fourteen Super 12 games so far have been affected by rain in some way or the other. This is what he said on the microblogging site.

The first match of the 20-20 World Cup to be impacted was the encounter between South Africa and Zimbabwe which took place in Hobart on October 24. The fixture was reduced to nine overs in the first innings and seven overs in the second innings due to rain.

The Proteas were motoring along to the target of 64 before the heavens opened up and no further play was possible from that point due to which each team had to be satisfied with a point.

The game between England and Australia was washed out at the Melbourne Cricket Ground

On October 26, the match between Ireland and England which was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was also a rain-hit encounter. In a chase of 158, England were at 105/5 in 14.3 overs when the result could have gone anyhow but England were found to be 5 runs short of the DLS par score at that point. They could have turned the game completely if play continued.

The match between Afghanistan and New Zealand which was held on the same day was also abandoned and no play was possible. On October 28 two games met the same fate as two matches in Group one did not have a result due to rain and they were involving Ireland and Afghanistan and then Australia and England. Both were played at the MCG.
