Sri Lankan cricket is rocked with just two weeks left for the Cricket World Cup 2023 to be played in India. The 1996 World Cup winners were bowled out for just 50 runs in the Asia Cup 2023 final. The fallout seems to have begun with effect to be seen as massive changes are in place for the national team. After Sri Lanka’s embarrassing loss to India in the 2023 Asia Cup final, the Sri Lankan Cricket Body has decided to ring in the changes for the ODI World Cup.

Dasun Shanaka is expected to be a casualty as one veteran member is rumored to make his comeback. As per Revsportz, Dasun Shanaka is likely to step down as the Sri Lankan skipper. The move comes just a few weeks ahead of the ODI World Cup. The reason behind this move is the mauling Sri Lankan team received in the Asia Cup final. The Sri Lankan team was all out for just 50 runs with Shanaka scoring a duck.

More changes in store for Sri Lanka

Kusal Mendis, top-scored in the Asia Cup final with 17 as well as ending the tournament as the 2^nd highest run scorer. As per reports, the 28-year-old Kusal Mendis is in the fray to replace Dasun Shanaka as the ODI Skipper. Mendis scored 270 runs during Asia Cup 2023 and also kept wickets for his team. Former Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews is also set for a comeback to the ODI side. The reason behind this move is to lend more solidity to the Sri Lankan batting as well as experience. The 36-year-old has played 221 ODI games and his last game was in June 2023 against Afghanistan.

Wanindu Hasaranga had been ruled out of Asia Cup 2023 with a thigh strain. As per reports, the ace Sri Lankan all-rounder has picked up yet another injury. This could mean more bad news for Sri Lanka as Hasaranga is already in a race against time for fitness. Hasaranga along with Dushmanta Chameera, Dilshan Madushanka and Lahiru Kumara had missed the entire Asia Cup 2023 tournament. The break-out star of Asia Cup 2023. Dunith Wellalage could be overlooked for the tournament. As per reports, the young sensation could be dropped in favor of Avishka Fernando. Wellalage impressed everyone with his 5/40 and 43 against India during Adia Cup 2023.
