The England management is still holding their cards close to their chest as far as the World Cup squad is concerned. There have been reports that England coach Mathew Mott and Jos Buttler could still hold talks with Ben Stokes and convince him to come out of ODI retirement ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Stokes last played an ODI against South Africa and then retired from the format. The all-rounder was very pivotal in England winning the 2019 World Cup.

In 11 matches in the 2019 World Cup Stokes smashed 465 runs for the Three Lions. The left-hander struck the highest score of 89. Stokes also picked up seven wickets with the ball.  ‘Jos will probably lead the way on that communication, but Ben’s pretty straight with all of us. We will see if he’s keen. Mott said to the Daily Mail.

There is a high chance that we will take the risk on Jofra Archer- Mathew Mott

‘There has not been a clear direction on what he’s going to do yet, but we are still hopeful. I’ve always said his bowling would be a bonus, but just look at what he brings with the bat, even in the field. ‘Watching him throughout the whole Ashes series, he had such a great presence. He’s done it for years when it comes to performing in one-day cricket and so he’s an invaluable commodity.’ Mott further added.

Stokes showed what he was capable of with the bat in the Ashes series as well where he hit 405 runs in five matches for the Three Lions at an average of 45. Stokes recently had a knee injury and has been working around it. This meant that he has not been able to deliver as consistently with the ball as he would have liked. When it comes to Jofra Archer, Mott was upbeat about having him back into the England setup.

‘There is a high chance that we will take a risk on a proven performer that has done it on the world stage.”We are planning for him to be available. Obviously, a lot of things have to go his way and it will be a tight timeline but with players like that you are going to give them every opportunity to prove their fitness, and so we will keep an open mind.’ The England head coach added.
