India announced its ODI squad against Australia for the three-match series at home. Yuzvendra Chahal who was not part of the Asia Cup squad is also not part of the series.  Chahal was also not part of the 2023 ODI World Cup squad that was announced recently. Now Harbhajan Singh believes Chahal should get a chance in place of Axar Patel if he is ruled out. Axar suffered a quadriceps strain in the Asia Cup.

Yuzvendra Chahal should have been here. He has not been given an opportunity. It is beyond my understanding. Either he has fought with someone or he has said something to someone, I don’t know. If we talk only about skill, his name should have been there in this team because a lot of Team India players are resting.” Harbhajan said on his YouTube channel. In a surprise move, Ravichandran Ashwin earned a surprise recall to the Indian side. The off-spinner last played an ODI back in 2022.

You will have to have batting depth till no 7 or 8  – Harbhajan Singh

“Australia were playing against South Africa and India were playing against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. Australia are a different team. You will have to be at your best to beat Australia because they have decent batting till No. 7 or No. 8 and they have solid hitters.” he added. Notably, India brought in Washinton Sundar for the Asia Cup final. The thinking behind this would have been that Sundar would bowl a few overs of spin and also provide some batting depth at number 8.

If Axar is ruled out then either Sundar or Ashwin could come in, When it comes to Chahal he did not play in the continental tournament and was sidelined. In the 2019 World Cup, the man from Haryana was India’s go-to spinner along with Kuldeep Yadav. The Men in Blue lost to New Zealand in a threat-wrenching semi-final which took place at Manchester. Chahal has picked 121 ODI wickets in 72 games for India.
