The upcoming Asia Cup 2023 will be co-hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka in a hybrid model. India, Pakistan and Nepal will play in one group, and the other group will consist of Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. India and Pakistan will possibly face each other twice as they will play once in the group stages and another time in the Super Fours. Ahead of the first India-Pakistan clash on September 2, people have started taking barbs at each other.
Aquib Javed has hit the ground running with a controversial statement where he questioned Rohit Sharma and his captaincy.’Definitely, Babar Azam is a better captain than Rohit Sharma. Babar has earned respect, and the way he has been performing in the team is there to see. I’m sure cricket fans in India are wondering why Rohit is even the captain,” Javed said. It has not been an easy ride for Rohit Sharma as Indian captain as the team lost the T20 World Cup semi-final in Australia.
Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka 2-0 in the Test series
Even in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, Australia hammered India by 209 runs. When Rohit took over the Indian captaincy from Virat Kohli, the thought was that he would use all of his Indian Premier League (IPL) experience and win trophies for the Indian team as well. The Mumbaikar has won five titles as Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper, but the international stage was a completely different kettle of fish and he has not been able to crack the code so far.
Under Babar Azam, Pakistan mauled Sri Lanka 2-0 in Sri Lanka in the Test series. Pakistan also made it to the finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup. Javed further went on to say that Kohli has not been as consistent as Babar in international cricket. He said if Kohli has a bright patch then he would end up having a lean patch but that is not the case with Babar. India and Pakistan last played an ODI in the 2019 World Cup which was won by India, The Asia Cup games will be held in the 50-over format ahead of the 2023 World Cup.
