‘Yeh kitna swarth aur kharab statement hai’ – Fans react to Stephen Fleming’s statement on winning the IPL and not developing young players

Stephen Fleming has made a controversial statement which has created a storm on social media. He said that as a coach he only wants to win the Indian Premier League and not focus on the development of young Indian players. This is a slightly weird statement coming from the CSK coach considering he praised Mukesh Choudary and Simarjeet Singh in 2022 and pegged them to become future stars for CSK.

The IPL’s main aim was to provide opportunities for the young Indian players. It was called the cricketing festival in India. The tournament also was marketed on the basis that you cannot get an opportunity elsewhere as you get in India. With MS Dhoni and Flemming at the helm, they have helped CSK get four IPL titles. CSK is the second most successful franchise in the tournament.

In CSK’s case itself, there is a case in point with Tushar Deshpande and Rajvardhan Hangargekar, who have done well with the opportunities that they have got in the tournament. This has happened due to the absence of Deepak Chahar, who might be subjected to another long layoff due to injury. The fast bowlers have got vital breakthroughs for CSK and have been better bowlers at the death.

When it comes to youngsters in IPL 2023, they have been doing well. The likes of Tim David and Cameron Green have won a game for Mumbai Indians after a rocky start to the season. Sunrisers Hyderabad have got a relatively young side, but they have a top-class bowling attack which won against an in-form Punjab Kings to get their first win in the tournament. In 2018, Ricky Ponting Delhi Capitals coach made a big statement about winning the IPL that year.

But sadly, the season did not go well for DC. Gautam Gambhir had to step down as captain of the side. Shreyas Iyer took over and it was only then that DC started to win a few games towards the fag end of that season. This statement from Fleming carries merit as well because the IPL has been seen as a business sometimes more than a cricket tournament.

Well well, this is an interesting POV. IPL was made to let cricket grow in India. It's motto is "Where Talent meets Opportunity". But CSK's 2018 season is the best example that they don't care about growing local players, they just care about winning the Tournament.
