India and Australia battled it out on the second day in the Third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia started the day with four wickets down and with a lead of 47. India pulled things back early in the morning with quick wickets. The Australians were dismissed for just 197. They lost their last six wickets for 12 runs.

It took the trio of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Umesh Yadav to skittle down Australia. Jadeja picked up 4-78 in his 32-over spell. Ashwin picked up 3-44 in his 20.3 over spell. Umesh picked up 3-12 in his five-over spell. The Australians did not have an answer for the Indian bowling as India spun a web around Australia.

India had no answers to the spin trio of Australia

In the second innings, Australia replied in kind, on a rank turner in Indore, India found the going tough and it looked like they had a very defensive approach and did not attack the spinners enough. India did not decode the spin trio of Nathan Lyon, Mathew Kuhnemann and Todd Murphy and struggled on the red soil pitch.

It remains to be seen whether India can still call themselves good players of spin, The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and KS Bharat found it very tough to play a rampant Nathan Lyon who picked up 8-64 in his 23.3 over spell to put the Indians on the mat. India were also missing the likes of Rishabh Pant who had an attacking game plan against spin.

Pant would have provided a proper left-handed option in the middle order and would have made a fine balance between attack and defence. The Indian top order also looks very fragile and looks pedestrian against good spin bowling. India have had to depend on the likes of Jadeja, Patel and Ashwin to bail them out of precarious situations.

Australia just needs 76 runs to win and will most likely finish the hob on Day 3. With India almost certain to lose this test, it has thrown a spanner in the works for the pitch with regards to the fourth Test on whether it will be seaming track to resemble English conditions or will India dish out another rank turner.
