After winning the Asia Cup in 2023, Indian team management now has eyes on the prestigious ODI World Cup. Ahead of the marquee tournament, India will be facing Australia in a three-match ODI series. Despite being one of the favourites in the tournament, India rested its top batters and all-rounders for the first two games.

Meanwhile, India also picked off spin allrounders Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin for the three-match series. This selection is more significant when frontline all-rounder Axar Patel is nursing an injury. As per the latest update, team management is looking for Axar’s replacement, which might end up during the Australia series.

It’s worth noting that recent news reports suggest that Ashwin will replace Axar in the World Cup squad if he fails to recover by September 28. Earlier, India skipper Rohit Sharma hinted that team management wanted Ashwin to play in the finals of the Asia Cup, but they had to call Sundar, who was available for the selection. After the team selection, Rohit echoed the same and praised Ashwin. He also said that the upcoming three games will let us know what Ashwin brings to us in white-ball cricket.

Game time is not a concern with Ashwin: Rohit Sharma

While speaking about Ravichandran Ashwin’s surprise selection, India skipper Rohit Sharma praised the off-spinner. Rohit said that considering the experience Ashwin has, the game time is not a big concern. “With the kind of experience Ashwin has, he has played close to 100 Tests and 115 ODIs. Yes, it is all in the past, but he has been consistently playing Test cricket. With guys like Ashwin, game time and time on the ground are not so much of a concern. That is why we thought if he was an option for us, we needed to get him in”, says Rohit.

“With the kind of experience he has, for guys like him, it’s all in the head more than the body. I thought getting him in could give us a chance to understand where he is, how his body is, and stuff like that,” he further added. However, despite team management’s confidence, it will not be an easy task for Ravichandran Ashwin to make a comeback in ODI cricket after two years of break. He will need to prove his worth before the prestigious ODI World Cup.
