Team India’s next important assignment is the Asia Cup. The continental tournament will be held in Sri Lanka and Pakistan which will follow a hybrid model. The games will be played in the ODI format ahead of the ODI World Cup in India. Nine games will be hosted by Sri Lanka and four games will be hosted by Pakistan. The schedule will involve travel between the two countries. The Men in Blue will play all their 5.26 games in Sri Lanka.
When it comes to India’s squad, the usual suspects have boarded the flight to Sri Lanka barring some unexpected inclusions and exclusions. Tilak Varma fresh off his T20I heroics in the West Indies has made the cut. The big snub though has been of Yuzvendra Chahal. Once India’s premier leg spinner finds himself out of the Asia Cup squad and down the pecking order ahead of the World Cup which will be held at home.
Yuzvendra Chahal has picked up 121 wickets in ODIs for India
In ODI’s, the wrist-spinner has picked up 121 wickets in 72 matches at an average of 27.12 and at an economy rate of 5.26. When Yuzvendra Chahal was brought into the Indian side, his job was to get wickets in the middle overs for the national side. In recent times Kuldeep Yadav has gone up the pecking order and shown huge improvements as a bowler and that is why he is in the Asia Cup squad.
In the 2023 Indian Premier League, he had a great season for the Rajasthan Royals where he picked up 21 wickets. When it came to the Asia Cup squad, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer come back in. Since Rahul is not fully fit, Sanju Samson comes in as a travelling reserve who will also serve as backup keeping option. Prasidh Krishna also finds a place in the ODI squad. The strangest part about the squad is despite the tournament being held in Sri Lanka there are only three spinning options and six fast-bowling options. Hardik Pandya retains the vice-captaincy.
