From the players themselves to the media, fans, former Cricketers, and even the Prime Ministers of the two nations, off the field, everyone is involved in Ashes 2023. A lot of Cricketers have shared their opinions on the second Test, particularly regarding the dismissal of Jonny Bairstow. The stumping of the wicketkeeper batter has forced everyone to react to the incident. The fans, Former cricketers, and the players themselves have commented on the decision.

Many have pointed out a similar incident in Ashes 2019 where Jonny Bairstow as the wicketkeeper had attempted to dismiss Marnus Labuschagne in a similar way he was dismissed at the Lords. Some have also pointed out MS Dhoni withdrawing the dismissal against Ian Bell in 2011. Speaking about a similar incident like the one at the Lords, the Australian batter Travis Head has revealed what Jonny Bairstow had told him in Edgbaston earlier during this series.

Travis Head shares what Bairstow told him earlier in the series

The Southpaw said “Last Test at Edgbaston I walked off my crease at the end of the over and the ball got whipped in. I questioned Bairstow would he take the stumps off, he said ‘Bloody oath I would’. I reminded him of this and said you’d exactly do the same”. Travis Head was the person that spoke with Jonny Bairstow soon after the dismissal at Lord’s. While it was unsure regarding what they spoke about, Head has opened up about the incident. Along with Head, the on-field umpire seemed to have a word or two with Jonny Bairstow post the dismissal.

The Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey received a lot of criticism for dismissing Bairstow as per the rules. Stuart Broad said “You’ll always be remembered for that” pointing at the dismissal during the match. While it is not clear if what Head said is true or not, it can be assumed that if English were in the shoes of Australians, they would’ve done the same, especially looking at their conduct in similar situations in the past.
