Will Pucovski has recovered from his latest bout of concussion and has been added to Victoria’s squad for their next Sheffield Shield game against New South Wales. Will Pucovski’s return to the Sheffield Shield is a welcome sight for Victorian fans but comes after a concerning scare. Initially cleared after being hit on the helmet in a Second XI match, he experienced delayed symptoms and missed the clash against South Australia.

However, he has recovered and been selected for the crucial encounter against NSW. This is a significant boost for Victoria, as Pucovski is one of their main batters and his presence will be vital as they chase a finals berth. David Hussey, who is the head of Victoria Cricket, acknowledged that it would be great to have the services of Pucovski. He also expressed delight over the return of skipper Will Sutherland who missed a few games owing to national duty.

“It is fantastic to welcome back our captain in Will Sutherland for the Shield after his international debut, while it is also great to have Will Pucovski back in the squad,” Hussey said.

Last of Pucovski’s tryst with concussions?

Pucovski’s talent is undeniable, but his career has been shadowed by a concerning history of concussions. This latest scare, his 11th, raises worries about his long-term health and participation in the sport.

His cricketing journey began brightly, scoring a double century at 20 before his first concussion in 2017. Despite setbacks, he reached the Test arena in 2021, only to suffer another head knock and mental health challenges. He’s also faced criticism for returning too soon, raising questions about player welfare protocols. This recent episode, with lingering symptoms despite passing initial tests, underscores the complexity of concussions and the need for individualized management, especially in a case like Pucovski’s.

While his return to the Sheffield Shield is positive, it’s a reminder of the ongoing battle he faces, not just against opposition bowlers, but against the threat of head injuries.
