The 20-year-old Tilak Varma has been a sensation in the Indian Premier League among youngsters. The Guntur-born cricketer was a part of India’s under-19 World Cup team in 2020 that lost the final against Bangladesh. Though the youngster could not perform well with the bat, he impressed everyone after his debut in the Indian Premier League for Mumbai Indians in the 2022 season. The Southpaw was the second-highest run-scorer for Mumbai Indians in the season.
In 14 innings for Mumbai Indians in the season, Tilak scored 397 runs at an average of 36.09, at a strike rate of 131.02, including 2 fifty. The young batter only got better the following season. In IPL 2023, Varma played 11 matches and scored 343 runs at an average of 42.87, and an excellent strike rate of 164.11, including a fifty. While Varma was very good in his maiden season, he became a completely different player in IPL 2023.
Maiden International call up
Tilak Varma was aggressive and consistent for Mumbai Indians. He batted in various positions from numbers 3 to 6 and performed his role with good efficiency. The lad can bowl a bit too. The efforts of the middle-order batter were noticed by the selectors, as he got his maiden call-up in international cricket. Tilak is selected in India’s squad for the T20i series against West Indies. With incredible versatility at an early age, Tilak can be vital in India’s middle order in the near future and beyond.
