Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 20-20 World Cup due to a back injury and now the Indian selectors and the team management, led by Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid, will have to look for the ideal replacement for Bumrah. Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar, and Mohammed Siraj are expected to be the frontrunners with Indian top brass expected to take a call on the matter very soon.
Shami was out of contention for the South Africa series as he was down with Covid-19. Siraj was named as Bumrah’s replacement in the last two T20Is against South Africa. Chahar, who is not known for death bowling, failed to impress in the last T20I at the backend, as he finished with 1 for 48 from his four overs.
Siraj was also taken to the cleaners as he bowled poorly and gave away extra runs. A poor fielding display from him in the third T20I only made things worse. He finished off with 0 for 44 from his four-over spell.
Dravid was broached upon the big question after the match, and this is what he had to say. “In terms of who the replacement is, we’ll have a look, we’ll see, we’ve got time until October 15th. Shami obviously is someone who’s in the standbys, but unfortunately for us, he couldn’t play this series, which would have been ideal from that perspective,” Dravid was quoted as saying on the official website of Cricket governing body.
“He’s in the NCA (National Cricket Academy in Bangalore) at the moment – we’ll have to get reports as to how he’s recovering, and what’s his status after 14-15 days of Covid, and we’ll take a call, once I get reports on how he’s feeling, then we can take a call and the selectors can take a call on how we move forward on it,” Dravid added.
When Rohit Sharma was quizzed on the same, he said- “We’ve got to get someone in who’s got experience, who’s bowled in Australia, and see what he has to offer. I don’t know who that guy is yet. There are a few guys in the reckoning for that, but we’ll make that call once we reach Australia.”
