Cricket fans were wowed after New Zealand registered a historic victory by 1 run against England in the second Test match in Wellington. After following on in the first inning, the Black Caps fought hard in the second innings, powered by the hundred of Kane Williamson, and registered a famous victory that will be discussed for ages. With this win, the hosts also drew the two-match Test-series by 1-1.
Batting first in Wellington, England declared their innings at 435 for 8. Joe Root and Harry Brook put up a solid partnership of 302 runs after the visitors were reduced to 21 for 3. Root remained unbeaten after scoring 153 off 224 balls with 10 fours and three sixes. While Brook smashed 186 runs off 176 balls hitting 24 fours and five sixes. Matt Henry scalped 4 wickets for the Kiwis.
Coming to bat in the second inning of the match, New Zealand’s batting line-up completely collapsed as they lost 7 wickets for 103 runs. The hosts somehow managed to go beyond 200 after the captain’s knock by Tim Southee who fired 73 runs from just 49 balls smashing five fours and six sixes. He also added 98 runs with Tom Blundell (38 off 79) for the eighth wicket. The hosts were bowled out for 209 runs and were forced to bat in the third inning trailing by 226 runs. Stuart Broad clinched 4 wickets, while James Andreson and Jack Leach shared 3-3 wickets
In order to save the Test match and the series, Tom Latham (83 off 172) and Devon Conway (61 off 155) give a firing start by adding 149 runs for the first wicket. After. that, came the special century by the former skipper Williamson who scored 132 runs off 282 balls hitting twelve boundaries. He also added 158 runs with Tom Blundell (90 off 166) for the sixth wicket. The Blackcaps were bowled out for 483 runs giving England a target of 258 runs.
Chasing the winning total, Root put up a fight for the visitors scoring 95 off 113 balls. He didn’t got any support from the other end apart from the skipper Ben Stokes (33 off 116) adding 121 runs for the sixth wicket. The game was going through various ups and downs, at last, Wicketkeeper Blundell took a splendid catch off Neil Wagnor’s delivery to dismiss Anderson and register a victory that will be written in the pages of history.
