Australia and New Zeeland squared off against each other in Cazalys stadium for the 2nd ODI. New Zeeland was hurting because they lost a closely fought contest in the 1st ODI and they would have wanted to start better here. The coin went the way of New Zeeland and they opted to bowl.

Matt Henry was breathing fire and provided the perfect start for New Zeeland by dismissing Warner and Finch very quickly for 5 and 0. Finch’s horror run with the bat did not end as he got yet another low score and Warner failed to get going as well.

The rock of Gibraltar, Steven Smith, was at his best as he played a measured innings of 61 from 94 balls, with 5 boundaries and 1 six which got some momentum going in favour of Australia. He was eventually dismissed by Tim Southee.

Then, Boult got the two wickets of Labuschagne and Stonis. This triggered a bit of a mini collapse as Carey, Maxwell and Abbott were dismissed by Santner, Boult and Matt Henry respectively. At 117-8 when it looked like Australia was dead and buried, they found some great guys in Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazelwood.

The Aussie tail is known to wag, and it did just that with Starc got a handy 38 off 45 balls, with 2 fours and a six. Zampa and Hazelwood also chipped in with vital contributions of 16 and 23, respectively and they hit 3 boundaries and 1 six in total. All these handy contributions helped Australia to get to a total of 196 in their 50 overs.

These runs were more than enough to defend for Australia as New Zeeland capitulated like 9 pins. The bowling unit of Australia was breathing fire on the New Zeeland batters. Adam Zampa just had a total chokehold on the New Zeeland batters and accounted for the big wickets of Kane Willamson and Darryl Mitchell and then claimed the wickets of Henry, Boult and Southee afterwards.

Starc and Abbott picked up two scalps each from their respective spells, and Marcus Stonis also picked up the wicket of James Neesham. New Zeeland was totally annihilated by Australia with the Aussies never say die attitude. The home team eventually won by 113 runs as the Kiwis were all out for 82 in 33 overs. Australia has an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series now.
