‘What a match’- Twitter thrilled as fans witness a low-scoring thriller between Australia and New Zealand

The 1st ODI between Australia and New Zealand kicked off at Cazaly’s stadium in Carins. The coin went the way of the Australians and they elected to bowl first. New Zealand were put into bat, and they got off to the worst possible start after losing Matin Guptill early who made only 6 runs from 19 balls.

Devon Convay and Kane Willamson, thereafter, steadied the ship for the kiwis and got to 91. Williamson showed some sort of form as he made 45 from 71 balls, including 3 fours and a six. Devon Covay made 46 from 68 balls which included 4 boundaries and a maximum. Tom Latham labored hard to score 43 from 57, which contained 2 fours and a six. No one really got going as wickets fell pretty quickly, thereafter.

Australia were on song with the ball as Josh Hazelwood struck thrice. Zampa and Starc picked up a wicket each in their bowling spells. But the star of the show with the ball for the Kangaroos was Glenn Maxwell, who accounted for 4 wickets and picked the big ones of Willamson, Latham, Mitchell and Bracewell. New Zeeland lost 9 wickets in the end and ended up with 232 on board.

In the chase, New Zealand knew that the bowling group had to bowl out of their skins to make a match out of this. Kane Willamson’s men did just that. Trent Boult dismissed Aaron Finch leg before for just 5 as his horror run with the bat continued.

Warner was dismissed shortly after by Matt Henry. Steven Smith and Marnus Labuschagne got out off Boult and Warner and Stonis were dismissed by Matt Henry. With the score at 44/5, New Zealand would have sensed that they have this match in the bag, but that was not to be.

Alex Carey and Cameron Green put on some stunning rearguard action and took the score to 202-5.  Alex Carey scored 85 from 99 balls with 8 fours and 1 six.  The star of the show for Australia was Cameroon Green, who battled cramps and scored a magnificent 89 not out from just 92 balls which had 10 fours and a maximum.

Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson picked up 2 wickets each and Trent Boult took 4 but it was not enough as Australia had enough steam in the tank to win the thriller in the end. Australia chased down the target with 2 wickets in hand and 5 overs left.
