‘What a game of cricket it was’ – Sri Lanka beat New Zealand in super over thriller at Dunedin in 1st T20I

New Zealand and Sri Lanka produced a T20I classic at Dunedin. New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat. Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka and was dismissed by Adam Milne for a duck. On the other end, Kusal Mendis made 25 off 9 balls with three fours and two sixes. Kusal Perera made a solid unbeaten 53 off 45 balls with four fours and one six, which held the innings together. Dhananjaya de Silva made 15 off 10 balls with one four and one six.

Charith Aslanka provided the perfect finishing touch for the Islanders. The left-hander made 67 off 41 balls with two fours and six sixes before being dismissed by Ben Lister. Wanindu Hasaranga made an unbeaten 21 off 11 with two sixes. Sri Lanka ended up on 196-5 in their 20 overs. James Neesham was the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis as he picked up 2-30 in his four overs.

New Zealand got off to the worst possible start. They lost Chad Bowes and Tim Seifert in quick succession. Bowes was dismissed for Madhushanka for 2. Seifert fell for a three-ball duck to Maheesh Theekshana. Tom Latham stablised the New Zealand innings with 27 off 16 balls with five fours. Daryl Mitchell kept New Zealand in the hunt with 66 off 44 balls with five fours and three sixes.

He got support from Mark Chapman who scored 33 off 23 balls with two fours and two sixes. Jimmy Neesham and Rachin Ravindra also contributed with 19 off 10 balls with tow fours and one six and 26 off 13 balls with two fours and two sixes respectively. Sri Lanka then came back with the wickets of Milne and Ravindra. The game went to the last over. New Zealand needed a six to get the super over and Ish Sodhi hit the blow.

The game went to the Super Over. Wanindu Hasaranga and Dasun Shanaka picked up two wickets each for Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka bowled first in the super over. Theekshana picked up two wickets and conceded just 8 runs. Sri Lanka easily hit the runs down with Asalanka scoring 10 in the Super over hitting one six and one four.
