There was a lot of drama that unfolded on Day 5 at Lords. England were 191-5 at the sixth ball of the 51st over in the first session. Then, Cameron Green bowled a short ball that was wide of the off stump to Jonny Bairstow. Bairstow left the ball and was running down the crease to get to his partner. He did not give any indication to the keeper or the slip cordon of doing so. Generally, players check with the wicketkeeper before they get to the other end which would ensure that the ball is dead.

Bairstow however was seen walking out of his crease in a very easy-going manner. Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey on the other hand looked like he was watching Bairstow’s moments like a hawk. When Bairstow was out of the crease he directed a well-aimed throw and scored a direct hit. When the run-out took place, Bairstow was nowhere in the frame and the Australian players were seen celebrating and appealing as they felt that Bairstow was definitely out. What Australia did was well within the rules.

Australia are leading the series 1-0 against England in Ashes Test

The rules state that the batter cannot leave the crease till the ball is deemed dead. If the batter decides to do so on any account, then he or she should check with the keeper and then only leave the crease. This moment will give more ignition to the Ashes. The Kangaroos would have felt hard done by on Day 4 when the catch taken by Mitchell Starc was declared not-out by the television umpire.

The Kangaroos are leading by 1-0 against the Three Lions in the series. England suffered a closely fought 2-wicket defeat at the hands of Australia at Edgbaston.  The Kangaroos were a bit hamstrung in terms of bowling resources as Nathan Lyon suffered a calf injury on Day 2 and now his Ashes participation is in doubt. The Third Test will take place at Leeds on July 6.
