‘We used to say that Shubman Gill is the future of Indian cricket, but now…’- Former India cricketer drops a huge statement on India star

Shubman Gill has made a double hundred against New Zealand at Hyderabad.

Shubman Gill has been the blue-eyed boy of Indian cricket, courtesy of the runs that he has scored over the last few series. He recently scored his maiden Test hundred against Bangladesh and then shortly after scored a maiden ODI double hundred. Gill became only the fifth Indian to accomplish this feat. He then scored his first T20I hundred as well.

The Punjab batter has scored 1254 runs in ODIs at an average of 73.76 and a strike rate of 109.80. He turned a curve in T20Is after scoring only 58 runs, in what was his debut series in T20Is against Sri Lanka. When he scored 144 runs against the Kiwis in the series that followed, Aakash Chopra showed high praise for his recent exploits.

“We used to say that Shubman Gill is the future of Indian cricket, now we have started saying that he is the present of Indian cricket. His potential was seen when he went to play in the Under-19 World Cup. He started playing well and asked people to watch him because he has something special.” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

He talked about how Gill proved him wrong when he was given a Test debut in Melbourne on Boxing Day. Chopra was a little apprehensive about how it will play out, but he was happy for Gill then. “When he made his Test debut, I was slightly fifty-fifty. I was thinking that the guy was making his debut at the Melbourne ground and how it would go. He batted very well there also and hasn’t looked back thereafter. He has regularly played well. There will be a few ups and downs but he has been good.”

The former India cricketer said that the 23-year-old has been making waves after the Indian T20 League edition in 2022, where he made 483 runs in 16 games. From there, he has scored a string of hundreds which have been wonderful to watch. He has also shown that he is going to be there for the long haul in international cricket.
