India swept New Zealand 3-0 in the recently-concluded ODI series. The Men in Blue were without senior player KL Rahul and also did not have the services of Shreyas Iyer who was ruled out of the series due to injury. Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav came in as replacements but did nothing noteworthy. Shubman Gill however scored 360 runs in the series and proved his mettle.

India skipper Rohit Sharma scored his 26th ODI hundred in the third ODI at Indore against the Kiwis. He said that the team is looking to give the youngsters ample opportunities so that they will be able to prove themselves. Rajat Patidar was drafted into the squad for the New Zealand series but could not get a game. The skipper said that the Men in Blue are following plans according to a blueprint; they have drawn up ahead of the ODI World Cup 2023.

We go according to some plans – Rohit Sharma ahead of 2023 ODI World Cup

“If we can find space for him we will get him to play,” said Rohit about Patidar. “Right now there is Kohli at No.3, Ishan Kishan at No.4 – he had sat out the last series after scoring a double century. At No.5 is Suryakumar Yadav, the whole world knows what he has been doing and then at No.6 there is Hardik Pandya. We want everyone to play but we cannot do that unless we find space for them.” Rohit stated.

“I know maybe we could have played him in Indore. In Ranchi, Ishan will also say, let me play, I am from Ranchi. But that is not how it works, we go according to some plans. Everyone will get a chance. That is what we have told the boys, we will give you a chance to play whenever we can but that opportunity should arise, there are a lot of boys waiting in line,” the 35-year-old added.

India will battle it out against the black caps in a short three-match T20I series before donning the whites for a four-match Test series against Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. After the Australia series, the Indian cricketers will play the Indian T20 League which will be back in its home and away format as it was traditionally played.
