ATK Mohun Bagan and Chennaiyin FC played it out at the Salt Lake Stadium on October 10, Monday, where the men from Chennai got the better of the Mariners in a 2-1 result. The first goal was scored by Kwame Karikari through a penalty which happened in the 63rd minute. The Bengal side came level with a goal from Manvir Singh but then Chennaiyin came roaring back in the 83rd minute, courtesy of Rahim Ali who scored a wonderful goal to give Chennaiyin the win.

Juan Ferrando backed his players to fight back harder in the upcoming games while maintaining a lack of confidence and a series of missed chances as the cause for the loss. He shared his thoughts on the game in the post-match press conference.

“When the team conceded the goals, the players at those moments lost confidence leading to misplaced passes, missing opportunities,” said Ferrando. “And on such occasions, it is important to tell them that it is okay, and this is football, there are these moments that will happen, but it is necessary to react and find the solution. It is not that hard to change the situation because we could’ve been better at marking, creating chances, and finding spaces.”

This is reality, we have chances, we finish the play: Ferrando

The coach said that according to him the missed chances cost them the game and that reflected on the result ”When we miss the chances, this is a recurring problem. When we have 5-6 chances, it is necessary to put three of them in the goal, and in this match, we faced a huge problem in doing that. This is the reality, we have chances, we finish the play, the team uses the space, creates the space, but then the opponent wins a penalty, and then scores. It is necessary to keep going and keep working”

When asked about the turning point of the match, the coach added that when the penalty shot was taken and scored into a goal, this affected the mindset of the players which changes their body language, this change in mindset had an ultimate bearing on the result.
