Former England captain Nasser Hussain questioned the efficacy of England’s aggressive “Bazball” cricket following England’s defeat to Australia in the first Test of the Ashes 2023 on Tuesday, June 20. Australia maintained their composure and secured the opening Ashes match by two wickets after defeating England.

Australia was in serious trouble against England at 227 for 8, but skipper Pat Cummins and lower-order batter Nathan Lyon maintained the fort to help Australia pull off an incredible victory. In the last 51 years, Australia produced their highest chase in England and their most successful chase at Edgbaston. Usman Khawaja played a conventional 65-ball game in a Test match of contrasting styles, while Cummins, who remained undefeated at 44, led the chase.

Nasser Hussain lauded Australia for consistently following their own standards and performing well in crucial contests

Following the loss, former English captain Nasser Hussain affirmed that England don’t need ‘Bazeball’ cricket to win against the Aussies. He also highlighted that England had beaten Australia in the Ashes series without reliance on their aggressive “Bazball” cricket tactics. He lauded Australia for consistently following their own standards and performing well in crucial contests.

“Remember, we’ve beaten Australia in England since 2001 playing the old-fashioned way. We didn’t need ‘Bazball’ to beat Australia. They’ve got some serious players and some seriously tough players as well. You can’t hide behind that (wanting to entertain),” Hussain said on Sky Sports as quoted by Hindustan Times.

In the same vein, McCullum sent a strong response to this “The application to how we want to play right throughout was superb. A couple of things didn’t quite go our way at times as well, but that’s the nature of the game.”

Australia is currently ahead of the series 1-0 with four Tests remaining owing to the triumph. On Wednesday, the second Test will get underway at Lord’s.
