India won a hard-fought match against Australia on Sunday, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the ODI World Cup 2023. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul stepped up for the Men in Blue side in a low-scoring total. Batting first, Australia could only score 199 runs before being bowled out.

Kohli has been a sensational fielder over the years and it once again came to light when the player took a brilliant catch in the first slip to dismiss Mitchell Marsh of Jasprit Bumrah’s delivery. The batter was awarded a gold medal after the match by the fielding coach T Dilip.

Pat Cummins won the coin toss and chose to bat first. The team struggled to score runs on a rather slow pace Chennai pitch. Jasprit Bumrah was the first to strike, dismissing Mitchell Marsh without scoring. David Warner and Steve Smith combined for 69 runs off 85 deliveries.

However, as both batters returned to the pavilion, no other batters were able to score and were bowled out by the spin combination of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Kuldeep Yadav. Jadeja took three wickets, two of which were Smith and Labuschagne. Six of the ten wickets were taken by the spinners. They were only able to score 199 runs before getting bowled out.

Virat Kohli achieves new milestone

In response, Australia pacers created havoc in Chennai, as three Indian batters Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer went back to the pavilion without scoring. When Kohli and KL Rahul came into bat, India was 2/3. At first, the two hitters played cautiously, rotating the strike and playing smaller dot balls.

The 34-year-old scored 85 runs off 116 balls before being removed when India needed almost 30-35 runs. Rahul remained unbeaten to the end, scoring 97 runs off 115 balls and finishing the game with a six. Kohli now has scored the most runs in successful run-chases in one-day internationals and the most runs for India in key white-ball tournaments. He has the most runs as a non-opener in the World Cup (ODI + T20I) and became the first Asian to complete 11,000 runs at No.3.
