Watch: Shafali Verma breaks down in tears after Indian team win the under-19 Women’s World Cup 2023

India’s women’s under-19 team created history on Sunday as Shafali Verma and Co. beat England by 7 wickets in the final to win the inaugural edition of the Under-19 Women’s 20-20 World Cup 2023.

The final of the tournament took place at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom in South Africa. Team India invited England to bat first and bundled them out for a paltry score of 68 runs in 17.1 overs.

The likes of Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi, and Parshavi Chopra bowled admirably as they ran through England’s batting unit, picking two wickets each. Besides, the captain Shafali Verma and Sonam Yadav also returned with a wicket each to their name.

In pursuit of the target, the Indian team led by Shafali Verma chased down the score in just 14 overs. Both the openers, namely Shafali Verma (15 off 11) and Shweta Sehrawat (5 off 6) got out early but Somya Tiwari and Gongali Trisha steadied the ship by adding 46 runs for the third wicket.

Both the batters scored 24 runs each and helped the team beat England by 7 wickets and, thereby, lifted the title. Following the win, Indian captain, Shafali Verma attended the post-match presentation but couldn’t control her emotions.

Tears were coming out of her eyes. She tried to control her emotions but broke down in tears in the end. You can watch the video here:

She thanked Indian Cricket Board and the fans for their constant support in helping the team lift the trophy.

Indian skipper, Shafali Verma finished the tournament as the third-highest run-getter, amassing 172 runs in 7 matches at 24.57. She scored one half-century in the tournament.

Meanwhile, Indian Cricket Board’s secretary Jay Shah announced ₹5 crore cash reward for the entire unit. “Women’s Cricket in India is on the upswing and the World Cup triumph has taken the stature of women’s cricket several notches higher. I am delighted to announce INR 5 crore for the entire team and support staff as prize money. This is surely a path-breaking year,” Shah tweeted after India’s triumph.
