Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar has been chosen to be felicitated with a special memento. The former Indian cricketer will be enshrined with a giant life-size statue that will be installed inside the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai, where he played his last international match. The statue is expected to be unveiled either on Tendulkar’s birthday on April 24 or during the upcoming ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Wankhede has been very special for Tendulkar as he started his cricketing career in Mumbai. He went on to win the 2011 World Cup and play his 200th Test on the same ground. Tendulkar said that it is a pleasant surprise as his cricketing journey started here.

‘The moment of my career is when we won the 2011 World Cup’ – Tendulkar

“Well, it’s a pleasant surprise. The president is here, Mr. Kale and the other committee members are going to join us in a while. We’ve come here to identify a spot. The idea was shared with me, and as I said it is a pleasant surprise. My career had started here and this is like the completion of a big circle,” said Tendulkar.

“It’s been a journey with unbelievable memories and the best moment of my cricketing career came here when we won the World Cup in 2011. The reason that happened was a long time ago when [Ramakant] Achrekar sir (Sachin’s coach) reprimanded me and from there on, I became a serious cricketer. The last international game I played as also at this very ground so it’s very special and a great moment for me,” he further added.

Tendulkar is the only batter in history to score 100 centuries across the formats. He has scored a total of 34357 runs in international cricket. He also has his wax statue at Madame Tussauds that was installed in 2009.
