WATCH: India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s bizarre run out against England in first Test

In an earlier T20 World Cup semifinal against Australia earlier this year, Kaur faced a similar fate.

During the one-off Test against England at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, India’s women’s team captain, Harmanpreet Kaur faced an unusual dismissal. While attempting to secure a single run, Kaur, who was on the verge of a hard-earned half-century, encountered a unique situation. Dani Wyatt, positioned at cover, redirected Kaur back towards the batting crease. Unfortunately, Kaur couldn’t make it back in time as her bat became entangled at the crease’s edge.

The England team appealed citing the situation, and the third umpire was tasked with making the decision. Upon reviewing the replays, it was evident that Harmanpreet Kaur was just outside the crease when wicketkeeper Amy Jones removed the bails. As a result, the right-handed batter had to leave the field after scoring 49 runs off 81 balls.

This incident marks not the first time that the India captain has experienced such a dismissal. In an earlier T20 World Cup semifinal against Australia earlier this year, Kaur faced a similar fate. Unfortunately, India ended up losing that match by a narrow margin of five runs.

In the one-off Test match between India and England at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, India won the toss and elected to bat. Making a return to red-ball cricket after a two-year hiatus, India handed debuts to Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Thakur, and Shubha Satheesh, while England promoted Sophia Dunkley in the absence of Emma Lamb.

After losing the T20I series 1-2, Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur aimed for a strong start in the Test. The Indian Women’s team had not played red-ball cricket since 2021 when they faced Australia. Eager to overcome the rustiness, they sought a positive outcome in the five-day fixture.

The last Test for India against Australia ended in a draw, with Smriti Mandhana earning Player of the Match for her remarkable innings. India aimed to replicate success at home. England’s Women’s team, having last played a Test against Australia, where Tamsin Beaumont’s double-century couldn’t secure a win, aimed to overcome red-ball challenges under the leadership of Heather Knight. Both teams aspired to perform well in the Test match at India’s home ground.
