Governing Body for International Cricket gave legality to the bowler running the non-strike batter out when they’re backing too far, this year. Despite that however debates around the topic continue to be held around the topic. Many, usually from the SENA countries believe that this form of dismissal, infamously called Mankading, is unfair to the batter. Most from the Indian subcontinent and other countries also believe that leaving the crease early is a form of cheating by the non-strike batter and not the other way around.

Ravi Ashwin has been a proponent of this form of dismissal after he ran Jos Butler out in the Indian T20 League season 2019. Since then India women’s cricketer Deepti Sharma has also run England batter, Charlie Dean, out in a similar fashion.

It is clear that running the non-striker batter out for taking unfair advantage is a highly supported move in Indian cricket. India’s Women’s under-19 player Mannat Kashyap would have thought the same after she ran South Africa batter out in a similar fashion.

To her surprise, however, the India team’s captain Shafali Verma called the batter back and allowed her to bat again. The incident did not just die there, as England cricketer Danielle Wyatt weighed in on the run out with a thinly veiled dig at the form of dismissal.

Quoting a video tweet that showed Mannat running out of South Africa with the captain, “ Mannat doing Mannat things. (Mannat Kashyap did it against Izzy Gaze in the match against NZ Development team as well).”

Wyatt wrote, “[Facepalm emoji] I hope there’s none of this in the u19 WC! “

A daily telegraph journalist named Daany Saeed replied, “Ahhh, this is ugly. Will let you know if I hear of any ways to avoid this. Maybe an adjustment to laws? A line the batter has to stay behind, similar to the bowler?”
