When the first ball was bowled at the Perth Stadium, the sun-soaked Australian summer felt alive. Cricket, has been deeply woven into the nation’s fabric, which roared back with the much-anticipated Test match between Australia and Pakistan. The air crackled with anticipation, which was a tangible reminder that the season of bat and ball had arrived.

Skipper Pat Cummin’s decision to bat first paid immediate dividends as the home team piled on the runs, currently sitting comfortably at 263-3. But the day belonged to one man: the inimitable David Warner. Playing the final chapter of his illustrious Test cricket career. The 37-year-old southpaw orchestrated a masterclass, stroking his 26th Test hundred in a display of pure artistry.

Warner lets his bat do the talking

The milestone arrived off the penultimate ball of the 43rd over, against debutant Aamer Jamal. His masterful century was a resounding rebuttal to the whispers of criticism that had preceded his final Test chapter. Former paceman Mitchell Johnson’s scathing column, questioning Warner’s merit for a farewell series, seemed like a distant memory as the southpaw painted the canvas pink. Ed Cowan’s dismissive “walking wicket” label crumbled under the weight of Warner’s experience and unwavering focus.

Upon getting to his milestone, Warner celebrated in his trademark manner- removing his helmet, taking a leap in the air and bringing out a loud roar. He ended the celebration with a short gesture in which he kept his fingers on his lips. The gesture was surely one for the critics.

Warner, currently on 116, has smashed 15 boundaries and one six so far. The one six that he hit was a sensational hit over long leg that caught everyone by surprise. Warner will now be looking to convert his ton into a daddy hundred to help Australia post a commanding first innings score on the board. Speaking to the broadcaster at the conclusion of the second session, Warner admitted that scoring runs was the only way to silence the critics.
