WATCH: Daniil Medvedev speaks about overcoming World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in US Open 2023 semifinal

The match between Daniil Medvedev and Carlos Alcaraz saw one of the best performances given by Medvedev in his career. The former world number one gave his everything and beat the Spanish sensation in a 4-setter contest. Medvedev has booked a place in the final to face the Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in the US Open 2023.

Carlos Alcaraz, who is so young and achieved a lot so far in his career, was one of the favourites to win the tournament. Till the semis, the 20-year-old did not face a huge challenge. In his third consecutive semifinal of a Grand Slam event in the year, Alcaraz met a spirited Medvedev who seemed at his absolute best on the day of the event.

Medvedev defeated Carlos 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 and booked a spot to have a rematch of the 2021 US Open final. Speaking about the challenge of Alcaraz, Medvedev said “I said I needed to play eleven out of ten. But I played twelve out of ten, except the third set. That is the only way (To win against Alcaraz). I do not know if he is still 20 or 21. But he is still so young,” and praised the calibre of the Spanish athlete.

Medvedev acknowledged the fact that Alcaraz has achieved a lot at a very young age. “Two Grand Slams and World number one for many weeks already. Honestly, it is just pretty unbelievable. I think nobody has done it before him. So, to beat him, you must be better than yourself. And I managed to do it,” revealed Medvedev about the challenge of beating Alcaraz in a Grand Slam.

At the tender age of 20, Alcaraz has won two Grand Slam events on two different surfaces. In 2022, the Spanish sensation won the US Open. The World number one athlete is the defending champion in Wimbledon, where he became the first player to defeat Novak Djokovic in a grass-court Grand Slam event in more than 5 years.
