Pakistan fans got to see one of the greatest battles in the nets on Saturday as two greats from Pakistan cricket, Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi collided ahead of the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League.

The eighth season of PSL will begin on 13th February as defending champions Lahore Qalandars will take on Multan Sultans. The final of the tournament will take place on 19th March in Lahore.

The competition will be staged across four venues, which are Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore and Multan. Ahead of the competition, Azam and Afridi went against each other in the nets on Saturday.

In a video released by the Lahore Qalandars, the Pakistan captain looked in good touch as he faced one of the best bowlers in world cricket. Azam played some sumptuous drives while facing Pakistan’s fast bowling sensation. Afridi also answered in style as he beat the edge of Babar’s bat a couple of times with some good deliveries.

Ahead of the tournament, Babar was traded to Peshawar Zalmi from the Karachi Kings. The Pakistan captain had been a constant fixture in the Kings lineup for seven years and joined Zalmi as part of a major trade deal.

Azam will be the captain for the Peshawar outfit this season. The 28-year-old said he was honoured to lead the franchise and he was excited about the new challenge.

It is an honour for me to lead the franchise: Babar Azam

“It is an honour for me to lead the franchise, and I’m excited about the new challenge,” Babar had said after his appointment.

“Peshawar Zalmi is one of the best teams of PSL and has done well consistently over the past few years,” he added.

Afridi showed his great captaincy skills as he led the Qalandars to a PSL title last year and also made vital contributions with the bat. The 22-year-old has been out of action in international cricket since the final of the 20-20 World Cup 2022. The left-arm seamer suffered a knee injury while taking a catch on the boundary and couldn’t bowl after that. He had bowled a magnificent spell of 1/13 in 2.1 overs before he treaded off the field.

As a result, Pakistan lost the final by five wickets and England were crowned champions for the second time in 20-20 World Cup.
