WATCH: Anil Kumble’s historic spell against Pakistan in Delhi on his birthday special

Anil Kumble was the second bowler to achieve the feat.

On this day in 1999, Anil Kumble scripted history in Indian cricket. The Indian leg spinner became just the second bowler in the world after Jim Laker to claim all the 10 wickets of an opponent in the single innings of a Test match. Laker had achieved the feat in 1956 against Australia in Ashes series in Manchester. Kumble was the first and only Indian bowler till date to achieve the feat.

In the first match of the series in Chennai, Pakistan had won a close match against India. Though Sachin Tendulkar scored 136 runs, India lost the match closely, thanks to a terrific spell of bowling from Saqlain Mushtaq. India appreciated Pakistan for the win and moved to Delhi. In Arun Jaitley stadium, India was all over Pakistan and made a terrific comeback to level the series.

For India’s win, their biggest match winner, Anil Kumble, had to step up. The former Indian cricketer claimed 4/75 in the first innings and helped India to reduce Pakistan for just 172 runs. In the second innings, Kumble achieved the historic feat by claiming all the wickets of Pakistan batters. Barring Waqar Younis, all the other batters were out, and dismissed by Anil Kumble.

Kumble just claimed wickets of Pakistan batters for fun. The right arm spinner dismissed the likes of Saeed Anwar, Shahid Afridi, Ijaz Ahmed, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Yousuf, Moin Khan, Saleem Malik, Wasim Akram, Mushtaq Ahmed, and Saqlain Mushtaq. Akram was the last man to be dismissed. Following the dismissal, there were huge celebrations from the Indian unit.

To date, Kumble is remembered for his spell in the Test match. It was like a perfect revenge achieved by India. Chasing 420 was not easy for Pakistan. But with Kumble in the attack, Pakistan batters had no answers to his bowling. Even after Kumble, only one other bowler has achieved the feat. Ajaz Patel in 2021 claimed 10 wickets in an innings against India in Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Kumble’s 5 wickets were either bowled or leg before wicket.
