Sanju Samson played a vital knock of 36 runs in the first ODI of the ongoing series against New Zealand and was also involved in a 94-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer. However, despite that, he was dropped from the second ODI match against New Zealand on Sunday.

In a bid to include one extra spin bowling option, India included Deepak Hooda in their paying XI and it was Sanju Samson, who had to make way for him. Neither of them could make their presence felt as the match was called off due to rain after 12.5 overs in the first innings.

The Indian team management had the option to rest Rishabh Pant instead of Sanju Samson, who can also keep wickets behind the stumps. Notably, Pant hasn’t been in great form with the bat, of late, and has received a lot of criticism for his poor returns in white ball format.

But, once again, it was Samson who had to face the brunt of getting sidelined from the crucial encounter.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer, Wasim Jaffer has revealed why Samson isn’t getting the chances he deserves in white-ball format.
Jaffer pointed out the lack of all-rounders and part-time spin options in the team as the biggest reason behind Samson’s exclusion from the playing XI.

“Sanju was dropped despite playing well cos we don’t have enough all rounders and part time options. My two cents on why there’s a dearth of all rounders and part timers. #NZvIND #SanjuSamson,” he wrote on Twitter, sharing a note.

“Lack of all rounders: We don’t manage all rounders well. Because there aren’t many around we’re quick to play them at the highest level, but then after few bad outings they’re out as quickly as they got in. Vijay Shankar, Venky lyer, Shivam Dube, and Krunal Pandya few examples. Need to show patience while they develop,” added Jaffer.

The third and last ODI of the series is slated to be played on Wednesday at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
