The 2023 ODI World Cup schedule was released in Mumbai on Thursday. Star Sports did a show with regard to the launch of the World Cup schedule. Virender Sehwag and Muttiah Muralitharan were on the program with Gaurav Kapur as the host. Sehwag went down the rabbit hole as he talked about some lesser-known stories of the 2011 World Cup. 2011 was the last time that India hosted the tournament and won on home ground.

Sehwag said MS Dhoni, the Indian skipper at that time, only ate khichdi as a superstition. Furthermore, Sehwag said that not only MS Dhoni but the entire Indian Team was quite superstitious in the tournament. As one may recall, MS Dhoni was not in his best form during the 2011 World Cup, and he kept up the superstition of eating khichdi as the national side were winning their matches. India beat Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium in the final.

Everyone had some superstitions- Virender Sehwag on the 2011 World Cup-winning side

“Everyone was having some or the other superstition, and everyone was following theirs. MS Dhoni had a superstition of having ‘khichdi’ all through the World Cup,” said Sehwag. “He used to say that even if I’m not scoring runs but this superstition is working, and we’re winning matches.” Sehwag said as he recalled the fond memory of the final against the Islanders. MS Dhoni turned his form around and struck a match-winning 91 on the big night in front of the boisterous home crowd.

Coming to the 2023 World Cup, the games will be held across 10 venues. 10 teams will be playing in the World Cup. The format will be in the form of a round-robin where one team will play with all of the remaining nine teams. India will solely host the tournament, unlike in 2011 when Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were co-hosts for the tournament.

India would want to win the tournament and break their 9-year trophy drought. The Men in Blue would want to do well in the World Cup and win it for their passionate fans, who have been the voice of the Indian side over many decades. The first game of the 2023 World Cup will be played between England and New Zealand.
