Virat Kohli has been in good form in the white ball format off late, after going through what can be called the worst phase of his life. He took the 20-20 World Cup in 2022 by storm as he was India’s best batter in the tournament scoring 296 runs at an average of 98.66 and a strike rate of 136.40 in the six matches that he played. From there he translated his T20I form into ODIs and went on to score three quick centuries, to the delight of his fans who awaited his comeback.

As India are toiling hard for the Border Gavaskar Trophy, former Pakistani captain Salman Butt made comparisons of Kohli to former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara and said that Kohli’s best is yet to come as he drew a parallel to Sangakkara, adding that the latter turned a corner towards the end of his career. The former Pakistani captain hoped for the replication of the same from the Indian superstar and it remains to be seen if the right-handed batter could live up to the expectations.

Smart players will choose their formats-  Salman Butt on Virat Kohli

“Virat Kohli’s best is yet to come,” Salman Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel. “He has become fluent but is not back in full flow. He had golden years in which he was unstoppable. When you look at Kumar Sangakkara’s career, the way he played towards the end of it was just amazing. He didn’t play in the same fashion when he was young,” he said, comparing the two players.

He talked about workload management as well and added that Kohli will take proper decisions and that he knows what is best for himself. “In modern-day cricket, the excessive amount of international cricket takes a toll on a player. Smart players choose their format and focus on that. Once that happens, they can continue their class. So it’s up to Kohli when it comes to deciding on his future. But I feel his best will come again,” the former Pakistani captain added.

India will play Australia in a four-match Test series for the first time at home since 2016-17. The last time the two met on Indian soil, it was the Kohli-led Indian team who won the three-match Test series 2-1. The last two editions of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy were won by India and it was a historic feat, considering that it was India who toured Australia. As far as the approaching series is concerned, the initial Test is slated on February 9 at the Nagpur stadium.
