Australian opener Usman Khawaja breathed a sigh of relief after scans cleared him of a jaw fracture, following a nasty blow from a Shamar Joseph bouncer during the first Test against West Indies in Adelaide. However, the 37-year-old’s participation in the second Test remains uncertain as he is still under observation for potential delayed concussion symptoms.

The incident occurred late on day three, with scores tied and Australia needing just one run for victory. Joseph unleashed a fearsome bouncer that clipped Khawaja’s helmet above the cheekbone, sending him sprawling to the ground. Medical staff rushed to his aid, assessing him on the field before retiring him hurt. As per Cricket Australia’s statement, Khawaja passed the initial concussion test but will be monitored closely for any delayed symptoms over the next 24 hours. He will undergo another concussion test tomorrow, and only then will a decision be made regarding his availability for the second Test in Brisbane, starting on January 25th.

“Just wanted Marnus to have a hit”

“He seems okay but will be monitored,” Australian captain Pat Cummins stated post-match, reflecting the cautious optimism surrounding Khawaja’s injury. Khawaja himself took to social media to provide an update with a touch of humour. “Thanks for all the well wishes. I’m fine, just wanted Marnus to have a hit!,” he wrote on Instagram.

Khawaja’s potential absence would be a significant blow to Australia’s batting order. The southpaw has been in stellar form, playing a pivotal role in Australia’s great results over a prolonged period. With Steve Smith still finding his feet at the opening position, the Aussies will want Khawaja to be fit and firing for the 2nd Test.

While the news of no fracture is a positive development, Khawaja’s participation in the second Test remains up in the air. The Australian medical team will tread cautiously, prioritizing his health and well-being above all else. Only time will tell if Khawaja can shake off the lingering effects of the blow and take his place at the crease in Brisbane.
